Eagles Bring The Big Lumber Against Menlo

Biola has won four conference games in a row.

Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The term "quality win" becomes a hot term around this part of March because of the all the basketball being played. But on the diamond today, Biola Baseball used its best offensive showing of the year for a signature 14-9 victory over No. 6 Menlo.

Jimmy Gallarda pitched seven innings for the seventh time this season and earned his fourth victory of the year with 27 first-pitch strikes and eight swing and misses. The senior righty accumulated 12 groundouts and four strikeouts while surrendering five earned runs to a Menlo team that has scored at least eight runs in six straight games.

"We're confident that Jimmy will come back out and put a zero on the board no matter how many runs a team scores the previous innings," said shortstop Ricky Perez. "His fastball is like a sinker that forces a lot of ground balls and he stuck with his stuff like a warrior today to help us get a win."

Perez put the finishing touch on things for the Eagles in the seventh inning with his first homerun of the year. His lightower shot to left followed a seven-run second and a six-run sixth for the Eagles offense that really kept the Oaks in catch-up mode.

The home team sent 11 batters to the plate in the second innings to stake Gallarda to a 7-0 lead. Led by the two-run homer by Rawley Hughes, Biola used five hits to knock starter Julian Jarrard out of the game after 1.2 innings pitched. Jeremy Barth got two hits in the inning and provided one of the three knocks the Eagles had with runners-in-scoring-position during the frame.

Biola was 7-for-10 on Thursday with runners in scoring position and batted 1.000 with runners at third and less than two outs.

"We've worked really hard to play good baseball lately and it was great to see the guys effort come to fruition today with big innings," said Head Coach Jay Sullenger. "We desire to be the type of team that work with one goal in mind and that happened really well today. Guys got hits when they needed them and that's what baseball is supposed to look like."

In the sixth, pinch hitter Kalani Nakamura led off with a single to left and was followed by a 4-for-4 combined line from the following six batters. Anj Bourgeois laid down a key sacrifice bunt that allowed Jerron Largusa to start the scoring in the inning with a two-run single. Then Joey Magro matched Largusa's two-run hit with one of his own two batters later.

Every Eagles starter reached base safely and scored a run as Biola collected 14 hits as a team.

"Our whole one through nine really put it together today," said Perez. "We moved the runner over, got the runs in when they were in scoring position and we were all able to drive the ball today when we needed to."

Sean McCarrell preserved the comfortable lead for the Eagles over the final two innings, inducing a momentous double play ball from the Oaks cleanup hitter to escape a jam in the eighth inning. He finished the game off by striking out second baseman Reed Kienle to finally silence Menlo's comeback attempt and strand runners at second and third.

Biola is now 11-2 when scoring first and has strung together four Golden State Athletic Conference wins in row as it climbs to 14-9. Menlo saw its five-game win streak snapped on Thursday and falls to 17-3 (6-1 GSAC).

The Eagles welcome another GSAC opponent to La Mirada on Friday as the Arizona Christian Firestorm come to town for a weekend series. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 2:30 p.m
