Our core values

Faith. Formation. Fierce.

These values describe what's at the core of the Biola Athletics experience. These three words came from our coaches, our staff, our alumni and our student-athletes, and they get at the heart of what it means to compete as a Biola Eagle.

Where they came from

College athletics has spent the last several years changing faster than it ever has. That gave the leadership of Biola Athletics a reason to stop and ask "who are we, and what do we actually believe about this work?"

Over the course of a year, surveys and conversations went out to head coaches, athletics staff, student-athletes, alumni and campus partners. We collected the words people kept reaching for. Some clustered around being rooted in Christ. Some around growth, discipleship and belonging. Some around drive, grit and intensity.

Three values emerged from that listening, and they were adopted as the public core values of Biola Athletics: Faith, Formation and Fierce. They were introduced to the public on August 7, 2026, alongside the refreshed Biola Eagles brand.

Faith

A faith-forward student-athlete experience centered on whole-person development.

We are rooted in Christ, anchored in Scripture, and grounded in faith. We have the freedom to compete with joy and passion as an expression of our love for God and each other. Our faith isn't performed, it's lived. Every practice, every game, every handshake with an opponent is a chance to embody God's love and bring Him glory.

Nurturing holistic athletic excellence to cultivate character, leadership and integrity.

We flourish in mind, body, and spirit, growing individually and as a community. Our coaches don't just build athletes; they build people who will lead, serve, and shine long after the final practice. We shape a community of kindness on our teams, with our campus, in our world.

Not only for today. We build bonds that outlast seasons. When you wear Biola across your chest, you have a team with you. Not only on the field of competition, but for life. We travel, play, and pray together, heart to heart, with firm convictions and as a light to the world.

Academics at Biola Athletics

3.452
Department grade point average, 2025-26

Formation is not an abstraction here. Biola student-athletes consistently rank at the top of the PacWest Conference in academic honors, and the department carried a 3.452 grade point average across all seventeen programs in 2025-26.

Biola University is a Christian university in La Mirada, California, competing in NCAA Division II as a member of the PacWest Conference across seventeen varsity programs. Our student-athletes are students first, and the classroom record says so.

They shall mount up with wings like eagles. They shall run and not be weary.
Isaiah 40:31

In her words

"As we've walked through this season of college athletics, it's been deeply meaningful to reflect on our identity with our coaches, staff, and student-athletes. We've been working to capture the culture and heart of Biola Athletics, and what has emerged are the three core values that truly define us: Faith, Formation, and Fierce.

In Faith, we are rooted in Christ, anchored in Scripture. Every practice, every game, every handshake with an opponent is a chance to embody God's love and bring him glory. Through Formation, we are dedicated to growth individually and as a community, developing people who will lead, serve, and shine long after their final season ends, creating bonds that truly outlast seasons. And in being Fierce, we compete and live with passion, honoring the gifts God has entrusted us to reflect His image.

Ultimately, we desire to be formed into Christlikeness and who God has made us to be through our intensity, grit, and courage in competition. We are Biola Eagles, and like Isaiah 40:31 shares, we will rise up and soar."

A brand built on them

The values came first. The marks followed.

When Biola Athletics unveiled its refreshed identity on August 7, 2026, the new Biola script, the updated Eagle and the new Biola Blue were the visible part. The values underneath were the reason any of it changed. More than a year of work with the branding studio Daake and its affiliate, The Athletic Branding Company, produced a system meant to carry Faith, Formation and Fierce rather than decorate them.

One detail carries the point. Our primary typeface, Beachwood, draws its lettering from Biola's iconic "Jesus Saves" sign, a piece of the university's history from its downtown Los Angeles campus. It now appears on the floor of Chase Gymnasium. Every headline you read on this site is set in a typeface that traces back to that sign.
