Men's Golf

Women Place 2nd, Men 4th In Final Tournament Of 2016

Biola Golf concluded its season on Tuesday with a solid final round at the GSAC Championships.

CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif. --- The 2015-16 Biola Golf season came to a close on Tuesday as an early morning round at Industry Hills Golf Course concluded the 2016 Golden State Athletic Conference Championships.

Biola Women's Golf ended the tournament with a 1,033 (+181) to finish in second place behind the tournament champion, Arizona Christian. Biola Men's Golf finished fourth in the six-team field with a 957 (+93).

It was the final tournament of the careers of seniors Jasmine Rodriguez and William Langworthy. Rodriguez ended her career with a stellar 79 on the final day as she secured the Eagles' highest finish on the women's side. Kyle McAbee, a freshman, was the highest finisher on the men's side, aided by a final round 74. McAbee's 74 on Tuesday was the second-lowest score shot among the entire tournament field.

"I thought we played fairly well in the third round. I thought if we could shoot around 300 each round we could compete to win," said men's head coach Hank Woodrome.

The Eagles actually shot in the 320s during Monday's play before dropping all the way down to a third round 309 to clean things up on the final day of competition. Biola finished sandwiched in nicely in fourth place with William Jessup more than 30 strokes ahead of them and Hope International more than 30 strokes behind it.

Dominic Ariondo and Austin Bishop joined McAbee by shooting rounds in the 70s on Tuesday morning. Bishop shot a 75 to end the tournament at 240 (+24), Ariondo ended with a 77 to finish his tournament at 239 (+23).

McAbee's 74 completed a three-round total of 233 (+17) as he led the way for Biola and finished 11th overall. He, Ariondo and Bishop will all be an integral part to Woodrome's future plans for the program.

Langworthy is a two-year captain and huge part of the past of Biola Men's Golf and ended his illustrious career with a tournament that saw him struggle to really get comfortable. He posted a three-round total of 267 (+51) to finish tie for 28th. Positively, his best round of the tournament came Tuesday when he shot an 83 during his final round of collegiate golf.

"He was our captain the last two years and will be missed next year. I really enjoyed coaching him. Not only was he a fine player, but he was a better person," said Woodrome.

Rodriguez paced the women's team on the final day of competition with her 78. It was her second lowest round of the season and the second time this year that she's bested what was her career low round coming into the year. She finished the 54 holes with a 255 (+42) to record one of four top-10 finishes for the Eagles.

Rodriguez finished sixth overall and was followed by Sarah Paravia in eighth, Lauren Van Horn in ninth and Amanda Hobbs tied for 10th.

Paravia saw a bump in her score on the final day of play as she added five strokes from her round two tally and finished with a 90. She finished with an overall score of 258 (+45).

As a team the Eagles dropped two strokes compared to their second round score on Monday. That was spearheaded by the 10 strokes that Rodriguez improved by.

Biola's other two top-10 finishers finished with an 89 and 90 on day two as Van Horn signed off her scorecard at 261 (+48) and Hobbs carded a 266 (+53).

All but Langworthy and Rodriguez return for the 2016-17 golf seasons as the future looks very bright on both sides.
