Solid Day All Around

Biola Men's Golf shaves 16 strokes off its first round score with a 297 on day two at the PacWest Championships and moves up a spot on the team leaderboard.

April 23, 2019

LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. --- Biola Men's Golf had an excellent day on its second playthrough at the Wigwam Golf Club on Tuesday. All five Eagles turned in scores of 80 or better as Biola knocked 16 strokes off its first round score to move into seventh place at the PacWest Golf Championships.

There was red all over the scorecard for Head Coach Cory Page's group in round two, indicating the 16 birdies the Eagles earned on the day to help catapult them over Chaminade and within two strokes of Notre Dame de Namur. Kyle McAbee led the Eagles with seven birdies on Tuesday, including four over his last five holes, to shoot a team best 71 in the second round.

"I was really happy for the guys to improve by 16 strokes out there today," said Coach Page. "The guys were really upbeat last night. They were confident that they could go out and play a lot better today, and they did."

McAbee now leads the PacWest Golf Championships field with 10 birdies through 36 holes and moved up nine spots on the leaderboard to 17th with a score of 149. Like McAbee, Austin Bishop also placed himself within striking distance of the top-five on the individual leaderboard by carding a 72 on Tuesday that closed with a 35 (-1) on the back nine. Bishop cracked the top-10 with his second round and is just two strokes out of the top-five while McAbee is four shots away.

The other Eagles weren't far behind those two seniors as junior Kaden Page matched Bishop through his first 17 holes before walking off hole 18 with a +3 for the day. Page turned in a 75 after collecting birdies on eight, 11 and 14, resulting in his best single-round score since he fired off back-to-back 73's at the Firestorm Fall Invitational last November.

Scott Hatfield also had an impressive finish to his second round and was clipped by just one stroke by Dominic Ariondo for the final countable score of Biola's round. Hatfield wrapped up his day with a birdie and played even par over his final 14 holes to pull out an 80 on Tuesday after sitting at +8 through four holes. Ariondo was just plain steady for his 79, recording his only birdie on 18 to give the Eagles sub-80 scores at their four countable positions.

The 297-mark is Biola's best result in a round over the past seven tournaments and made up 12 strokes in the team standings. After turning in the third-best round of the tournament through two days, the Eagles have a legitimate shot at a top-five finish with fifth-place Hawaii Pacific just five strokes in front of Biola.

The final round begins Wednesday at 7 a.m.
