Great Finish For Men’s Golf

Biola Men’s Golf concludes its final tournament by moving up to sixth and shooting another sub-300 round at the PacWest Championships.

April 24, 2019

LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. --- Wednesday's conclusion to the PacWest Championship definitely provided the fitting finish anyone would have wanted for Biola Men's Golf. Playing in their final tournament, the Eagles had one of the two best players in program history walk on the 18th green as Biola's last player on the course with the chance to help his team move up the leaderboard.

Senior Austin Bishop drained his par-putt and was quickly drenched by water bottles his teammates dumped on him in the 90-plus degree heat. The par on the final green secured a 73 in the final round for Bishop and gave Biola a team score under 300 for the second-straight day (298). As the final scores were reported, the Eagles jumped over Notre Dame de Namur for sixth place at the championship and were just two strokes behind Hawaii Pacific for a top-five finish.

The sixth-place finish is a one spot improvement from Biola's mark at the 2018 championships and the Eagles' team score of 908 is two strokes better than last year's 910. Biola had a final round score seven strokes better than last season.

Austin Bishop landed on the PacWest All-Tournament Team by finishing in ninth place with a 220 (+4). Bishop closed his round with four-straight pars and had a birdie on the par-five 14 to shoot -1 over his last six holes. Bishop's overall score of 220 is his best mark of the season in 54-hole tournaments while his ninth-place finish matches his season-best.

Biola's best score of the day came from junior Kaden Page, who opened the day with two birdies over his first five holes and carded an even-par 72 to move up eight spots into 25th-place. The junior got better with every round at the PacWest Championships and matched Bishop by playing his best three-round tournament of the year with a 230.

Seniors Dominic Ariondo and Kyle McAbee both had two great stretches in Wednesday's final round. Ariondo sank six-straight par putts from holes four to nine and completed the round with pars on five of his final six holes to record three sub-80 rounds at his final tournament. McAbee was Biola's second-best finisher, picking up birdies on 14 and 16 to nab 13th-place with a 74 in his final round.

Ariondo ends his collegiate career with four-straight rounds under 80 strokes after also accomplishing that feat in six-consecutive playthroughs from Nov. 7 to Feb. 18 this season. McAbee recorded the most birdies of any player in the field during the PacWest Championships and finished in the top-half of the leaderboard in five tournaments this year.

On Wednesday McAbee's number of birdies was equaled by junior Scott Hatfield, who birdied holes three, eight and 14 to give him a total score of 244 at the championships. A guy who's personality fit with the team from the moment he walked onto the squad at the beginning of the year, Hatfield highlighted how much he belonged at these Championships by shooting a 244 and beating out players from three other PacWest institutions.

Biola Athletics would like to thank this group of men for their excellent representation of the University during the program's final season and express our gratitude for all the Men's Golf alumni who played for the Eagles over the 12 years of the program's history.
