CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif. --- For the first time in its history the Golden State Athletic Conference is hosting its own conference championship golf tournament. Both of Biola's teams have a chance to compete for the crown and an automatic qualifying spot in the national tournament this week at Industry Hills Golf Course.
 
After getting in some practice on the courses on Sunday the teams took to a busy day of competition to open the tournament all day on Monday. It was a 36-hole day for both teams that has the tournament field shaping up through two-thirds of the tournament competition.
 
Head Coach Hank Woodrome's men's team sits in fourth of six team through the first two rounds of play with a two round total of 648 (+72). The team is in pretty comfortable position with just 18 holes left to play as there is a 20-stroke buffer on either side of them on the leaderboard.
 
The course was playing very tough on day one of play with zero teams shooting a round in the 200s. The individual low score was a 73 (+1), which was shot in the second round by the individual leader from Arizona Christian, Domenick Postorino (+4).
 
Biola's lowest scorer on the day was freshman Kyle McAbee. He shot a first round 77 and followed that up with an 82 in round two to end the day in 14^th with a total score of 159 (+15).
 
It was actually a trio of freshmen at the top of the Eagles' lineup as McAbee was followed by Dominic Ariondo (+18) and Austin Bishop (+21). The Eagles will look to hold their place just behind William Jessup in an early morning final round of competition on Tuesday.
 
The women's field looks a bit different from the men's because only three teams are able to field full teams of players. Of those three teams Arizona Christian holds a commanding lead through the first two rounds of competition. The Eagles are in second, but are a full 37 strokes behind the Firestorm who also have four of the top-5 individuals in the field.
 
Biola shot a 337 and 397 to end the first day of play with a 686 (+118). Sarah Paravia was the best scorer for Head Coach Jane Carr as she ended the day tied for fourth place by carding an 83 and 85 (+26). The lowest round in the field was a 79, which the individual leader, Jordyn Deardorff, shot twice.
 
Course conditions were also challenging for the women's course and the bit of wind that picked up in the City of Industry did not help the scores much either.
 
After Paravia the other four shooters for Biola all finished round one within a handful of strokes from each other. Lauren Van Horn and Jasmine Rodriguez both had top-10 standing through two rounds in seventh and ninth, respectively.
 
An early morning start on Tuesday has the teams on their way through the final 18 holes of competitive golf for this 2015-16 season.
