CLAREMONT, Calif. --- In the very last event before the NAIA Indoor National Championships, Biola sent nearly its entire roster to Claremont for the 19
th annual Rossi Relays on Feb. 28.
Â
It was a successful day all around as a lot of Eagles saw their first action of the season and got used to the competition again.
Â
"It was a good step for the team," said Assistant Coach
Collin Christensen. "It was particularly fun seeing our student-athletes embracing the challenge of new events and venturing outside of their comfort zone."
Â
Elyse Harabedian competing in the Distance Medley relay with a group of three freshman exemplified going outside of that comfort zone. Harabedian is in her third season competing in the pentathlon, so it's not every day she gets a chance to run a leg of a relay.
Â
It was the first collegiate track meet for many, but it was
Kwalia Mairori's first ever track meet. He ran the 3,000m and was a part of the men's DMR. Mairori combined with
Timmy Wilson,
James McCahon and
Eli Malfo to place 11
th in the DMR (10:46.41).
Â
A lot of Eagles set new personal-bests at this meet, with a few more hovering right around their all-time best mark.
Â
Hannah Feehan finished 26
th in the 3,000m with a 10:59.49 to set a new best. Harabedian set a new mark in the high jump with a second-place finish (1.62m).
Ambernicole Hollinger's 9.76m mark in an eighth-place shot put finish is her new collegiate-best.
Lizzy Burns finished just behind her in that same event with a PR 9.43m. Lastly,
Eli Malfo set a new personal-best with a javelin toss at 41.6m. He finished fifth overall.
Â
"Many set personal records or were very close, which is a great sign for the end of February," said Christensen. "There are plenty of things we need to work on, but all-in-all it was a good feeling to have a full track team out competing hard and representing the university."
Â
Malfo, McCahon,
Holton Witman,
Megan Crumley and Harabedian all recorded top-5 finishes in at least one of their events on the afternoon.
Â
The Eagles' next competition comes this week at the NAIA Indoor National Championships. Biola has 11 student-athletes at the event, which runs Thursday-Saturday. More information about the championships can be found atÂ
