Eagles Drop Into Elimination Bracket

Biola matches up with The Master’s at 9:00 a.m. Monday

Box Score REDWOOD CITY, Calif. --- A game that was scoreless through four innings turned into an entirely different animal in the fifth inning when the No. 3 seed Vanguard Lions got their third look at Biola's starter Jimmy Gallarda. The visiting team got its revenge on Sunday for its recent losses at Eagles Diamond with a 16-3 victory that pushes Biola into an elimination game on Monday.

The Eagles will face No. 4 The Master's, who lost 7-4 to the Menlo Oaks earlier on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 9:00 a.m.

Through the first four innings Monty McCasland and Gallarda posted dueling zeroes and took command against the opposing lineups. Sam Thorne was the only batter to get a base knock through the first 24 outs leading up to Vanguard's six-spot in the fifth.

Tanner Perry led off the inning with a double and eventually scored the first of of the game on a Jacob Leal single. The Lions would eventually add five more in the frame, with Brandon Sandoval's bases-clearing triple serving as the big blow in the inning.

When Gallarda was out of the game in the seventh, Vanguard began to add more runs to put the game out of reach. The Lions used four homeruns to add 10 runs to their lead in their final three innings at the plate while McCasland continued to throw deep into the game. Outfielder Brock Eissman left the yard twice with homeruns in the seventh and eighth innings.

McCasland held the Eagles to just two hits through his first eight innings of work and set his bullpen up for success in their next game by going 8.2 innings in the win. The Lions will face the No. 1 seed, Hope International.

Biola lashed back for three runs in the ninth inning before finally being retired and will try to use that momentum headed into Monday's elimination game.

Following a Ricky Perez single and two outs, the Eagles finally chased McCasland with three successive walks from the middle part of the order. Biola scored its first run on a Daniel Rasmussen walk with two outs and plated two more on a Jerron Largusa knock. A Lions reliever induced a flyout from the next hitter to end the game.

Late scoring from the Oaks create a similar dynamic for the Mustangs in their loss. Up 4-1 after three and with their ace on the bump, The Master's was held scoreless over the last six innings while the Oaks roared back for six unanswered against Jason Alexander.

Biola won two of three from The Master's in Santa Clarita during the regular season and scored four runs against probable starter Robert Winslow.
