High-Five Does Gallarda A Solid

Jerron Largusa led the offense with a homerun and three RBI in the victory.

Jerron Largusa hit his seventh homerun of the season on Friday.
Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- With the calendar turning to April, Golden State Athletic Conference games are getting pretty tight and extremely significant in the push to the GSAC tournament. It certainly was not easy for RV Biola in its first conference game of the month, but five runs from a proactive offense and eight strong innings from Jimmy Gallarda led to a 5-4 win over San Diego Christian.

"We were excited about this weekend and possibility of playing more good baseball," said Head Coach Jay Sullenger. "I thought the guys had a nice approach against their starter. They worked hard and had good at-bats and Largusa stood out in particular with the way he did that."

After Friday's GSAC results, the 25-13 Eagles gained a game on first place Menlo with a now 11-8 GSAC record. The Hawks drop to 13-17 and 8-14 in conference play.

Biola was quick to capitalize on Hawks starter Mark Young in the top of the first since the Hawks used Eagles Diamond for their home game on Friday. Young's back-to-back walks of Colton Worthington and Sam Thorne set the table for Biola to take a three-run lead before Gallarda threw his first pitch.

After Worthington scored on a throwing error, the Eagles stacked two-out singles from Rawley Hughes and Jerron Largusa to make it 3-0. Largusa carried the flag for the Biola lineup on Friday by collecting all three of the Eagles' RBI and being the only man with a multi-hit game.

In the fourth inning Largusa launched a 3-1 pitch to left field for a two-run homerun that made the score 5-1 at the time. It was Largusa's seventh of the season and was a pivotal moment in the game that reinforced Gallarda's attack of the strike-zone with his fastball when Biola was on defense.

The senior Lewisville, TX native threw at least seven innings for the 10th-consecutive start this season and got his seventh win of the year in the process. Gallarda navigated through eight innings by throwing 26 first-pitch strikes in 36 batters faced. He induced 12 groundouts, punched out seven Hawks and did not have a three-ball count until he had one out in the eighth inning.

"Jimmy filled up the zone and continued to get ground balls," said Sullenger. "Even if a lot of them found holes, he still demonstrated his ability to keep getting them and that resulted in a few keep double plays and an overall great job from him."

Vahn Bozoian made things close for San Diego Christian in the fifth by pulling his hands in and elevating a 0-1 fastball to centerfield for a two-run homerun. But the ever even-keeled Gallarda responded by tossing three zeroes on the scoreboard after that to keep the Hawks' offense in check. A difficult task considering San Diego Christian's 13 hits and the fact they never went down 1-2-3 in any inning on Friday.

Daniel Jang closed the door on his second save of the week and eighth of year with a 17-pitch ninth. Leadoff hitter Justin Hawkins' solo homerun made it a one-run game. But Jang mowed through the meat of the Hawks order to record three outs, ending the game on a flourish with a swinging strikeout.

These same two teams return to action tomorrow at Eagles Diamond for a doubleheader. The Hawks will remain the home team and deliver the first pitch of game one at 11:00 a.m.
