Eagles Ride The Jetstream Into First Place

Biola is tied atop the GSAC standings heading into play Saturday.

Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Senior starter Jimmy Gallarda and the Biola Eagles were out to prove a point on Friday. RV Biola earned its first regular season victory over the Westmont Warriors since Feb. 1 of Gallarda's freshman season (2014) with a 7-3 win behind three long balls and the starter's complete game.

"Our players came in with a lot of expectation today with their guy in Jimmy on the mound and with the way they've been feeling about their play lately," said Head Coach Jay Sullenger. "Jonas Wellan and Colton Worthington took timely swings today and guys like Ricky Perez took care of the ball at short with a few phenomenal plays thrown in to make it a fun day for us."

Biola's excitement continued after the game when it heard that its 16-9 conference mark helped climb into a tie with RV Vanguard for first place in the Golden State Athletic Conference. The 31-14 Eagles also tied their win total from 2016 as they handed the 24-18 Warriors their 13th GSAC loss despite the early success of Westmont starter Daniel Butler.

Butler allowed just two hits through his first four innings and contributed to nervous feeling of a pitcher's duel, nearly matched Gallarda frame for frame. But the Eagles used their first hit to score the first run of the game in the third after Anj Bourgeois' double to deep center plated Jerron Largusa.

Gallarda held up his end of the bargain by only allowing one runner to reach through his first four innings, but any hopes that one tally would be enough were discarded in the fifth.

Two hits to start the inning for Westmont put runners at second and third with nobody out and led to their first run on a groundout. But the senior buckled down with the go-ahead run 90 feet away, striking out the next two batters to end the inning and keep it tied 1-1 for Jonas Wellan.

Wellan led off the fifth inning by hitting a light tower fly ball to right that just kept carrying over the fence for his second homerun of the year. Wellan then made it 4-1 when he led off the seventh inning with his third homerun after a Joey Magro RBI knocked scored the Eagles third run of the game

"The momentum and energy we had in the dugout was a huge factor in the win today and Jimmy did a great job for us by going all nine innings," said Wellan. "I was really just trying to be a good leadoff hitter when I hit my homeruns and get on base, but it was awesome to see the dugout get excited with each homer and have that create more momentum for the win."

Gallarda went all nine innings with a season-high nine strikeouts, 12 groundouts and three earned runs for his ninth win of the year. He has won his last seven conference starts and has gone as least seven innings in 12-consecutive outings.

Westmont made things close at 7-3 with solo homeruns from Derek Rodigo and Luke Coffey in the ninth. But those shots were trumped by Colton Worthington's three-run blast to center in the seventh to follow Wellan's leadoff roundtripper. The homerun is Worthington's third of the week and made the score 7-1 headed into the eighth.

These two teams return to Eagles Diamond on Saturday for a doubleheader. The first pitch of game one is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
