Pitching Is King For Royals and Eagles

Wyatt Haccou earned his fourth win of the year in a 6-2 win on Saturday.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Late scoring gave both teams a win in Saturday's doubleheader and made two pitching duels appear more pedestrian than they actually were.

George Castillo's complete game shutout overshadowed Micah Beyer's 11-strikeout performance in game one to get RV Hope International a win. But Wyatt Haccou bobbed and weaved his way through 5.1 innings to give the Eagles enough time to open things up for a 6-2 win in the doubleheader capper.

With no GSAC team earning sweep over the weekend, the 22-12 Eagles (10-8 GSAC) two wins help them keep pace in the conference standings and help them gain a game on No. 21 Vanguard, Arizona Christian and Hope International. But the Royals' (18-8, 11-7 GSAC) 7-0 victory in Saturday's morning tilt keeps them in third place in the GSAC with a one game lead over Biola.

Castillo had to work out of a few jams early on against the Eagles, but he used his excellent fastball to take command of the game in the middle innings. Castillo struck out nine while surrendering one free pass and five hits in the shutout. Biola got Jeremy Barth as far at third base in the second inning, but the Royals were able to able to tag him out at home in a rundown.

Micah Beyer did everything he possibly could to give his offense a chance in game one and was extremely effective from the second inning through the eighth inning. After Devan Schermerhorn's RBI single gave the Royals a 1-0 lead, Beyer did not allow a single hit to the next 16 batters he faced.

Beyer had nine punch outs during that stretch and use 17 swings-and-misses to tie his career-high in strikeouts during the outing (11).

Hope International made the most of a small opening in the eighth to score three two-out runs against Biola's starter. And a two-run homerun in the ninth from Cameron Baranek increased the Royals' lead to the final margin of 7-0.

Baranek provided the muscle for the visitor's offense all day long on Saturday, hitting three homeruns on the day.

In the third inning of game two, the Eagles used two doubles, a Royals' fielding error and a balk to take the lead from starter Brandon Conlin and hand it over to Haccou.

Once he had the advantage, Haccou did not let it go. The right-handed pitcher tied his season-high for strikeouts with seven and got seven fly outs to get through 5.1 innings. He exited up 3-2 with men on first and second only to see closer Daniel Jang pick him up with a huge double play to get out of the inning. A bunt popup back to the pitcher allowed Jang to throw out the runner drifting off second and got the biggest cheer of the afternoon from the Biola dugout.

The Eagles put their foot on the gas in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the game away. Singles from Colton Worthington and Jimmy Gallarda, who earned his first at-bat of the year in a pinch hit spot, and a bases loaded walk to Jeremy Barth pushed home three more runs to set up Jang for a 1-2-3 frame in the ninth.

The 6-2 victory gives Haccou his fourth win of the season and Jang his sixth save. Sam Thorne and Worthington led the offense by reaching base safely three times. Ricky Perez and Barth come up big in run scoring opportunities and both reached twice.

Biola travels to Lancaster for its next contests: a Tuesday doubleheader with Antelope Valley. The first pitch of game one is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
