LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Tennis closed out the season series with San Diego Christian on Saturday at the Biola Tennis Center. Unfortunately for the Eagles, the Hawks came away with a season sweep by earning an 8-1 win in the women's match and a 6-3 win in the men's match.
Â
The women opened the day with their 11:00 a.m. match, which began with the six singles matchups. SDC won all six matchups in straight sets.
Kelsey Post was the closest to earning a win in singles, claiming wins in five games over her two sets.
Â
The one match win for BU in the women's match was at No. 2 doubles, where
Lauren Lee and
Brooke Sanford won their match 9-8 after taking the tiebreaker in the longest lasting doubles match.
Â
"San Diego Christian has a deep lineup and we were unable to get much going. After the singles the girls came out and played strong in doubles," said Head Coach
David Goodman. "Our number two team won their match in a tiebreaker. That was good to see especially because we lost to that team pretty badly the previous match in San Diego."
Â
The men's match was another bitterly contested battle that fell in favor of the Hawks. The 6-3 win for the Hawks was a slight improvement over their 5-4 win in San Diego earlier in the season.
Â
This match began with doubles, which is what really made the difference in the final score. The Eagles suffered an 8-2 loss at No. 1.
Luke Mountain and
Philip Westwood earned an 8-3 win at No. 2 and the Eagles' third pairing of
David Garcia and
Milos Zoric suffered a heartbreaking loss in a tiebreaker.
Â
"Number one doubles went down early and our number two team went up. It was plain to see that number three doubles would decide who would have the lead going into singles play," said Goodman. "San Diego Christian played better than us in the important moment and earned the match. In the singles we weren't able to get the momentum going on our side we fought hard but weren't able to dig into the matches and compete at a higher level."
Â
Garcia bounced back in singles play though as he earned a 6-2; 6-1 straight-set win for one of Biola's two matches won in that segment. The other match win was accomplished by
Joe Turnquist at No. 5 singles. He also finished off his opponent in straight sets with a 6-3; 6-4 win.
Â
Biola men's tennis fell to 5-8 (2-4 GSAC) and the women's tennis team fell to 3-10 (2-4 GSAC). The teams continue their season with non-conference matches on Wednesday and Thursday.
