Regional Champions

Pol Masafret Hernandez clinched the regional match for the Biola men’s tennis team.

LA MIRADA---The Biola men's tennis team defeated Hawaii Pacific 4-1 to advance to the NCAA Division II National Championships for the first time in program history.

"It was a very competitive match," stated head coach David Goodman. "HPU gave us all that we could handle. Things really weren't going our way early in the singles but the guys dug deep to play their best tennis."

Goodman continued, "Angel served very well and got us going in singles play. Adam had a big come back from being down a set and a break. Pol finished it out in a second set tiebreaker to send us to our first ever national championship. Very thankful to God for this team and opportunity ahead."

Biola had a strong start, winning the doubles point thanks to victories on courts one and three. Nationally-ranked No. 4 Alejandro Flores Monteverde and Angel Guerrero Melgar recorded the first victory, 6-1 on the first court. Juan Vallejo and Pol Masafret Hernandez fell in a tight 4–6 match on court two, but Keyon Gahvarehchi and Adam Large secured the doubles point with a clinching 6–4 victory on court three.

The Sharks struck first in singles, taking a 6-4, 6-2 victory on court six. Biola was quick to respond with a win on court one. Guerrero Melgar defeated his opponent 6-4, 6-4 to put Biola ahead 2-1.

Adam Large came through with the next victory on the third court. He defeated his opponent in three sets. He lost the first set 4-6 and came back to win the next two 6-3, 6-2.

Pol Masafret Hernandez recorded the game-clinching point on the fourth court. He won his first set 6-2 and then the second 7-5 in the tiebreak.
