Eagles Finish as PacWest Runners-Up

Biola battles in doubles but falls to No. 27 Azusa Pacific in title match

SURPRISE, Ariz.---The Biola men's tennis team fell 4–0 to top-seeded and nationally ranked No. 27 Azusa Pacific in the PacWest Championship match on Friday morning.

The Eagles battled in doubles play and nearly claimed the opening point. After Azusa Pacific took court two, Adam Large and Keyon Gahvarehchi responded with a 7–5 win on court three to even doubles play. The point came down to court one, where Alejandro Flores Monteverde and Angel Guerrero Melgar pushed their opponents to a tiebreak before falling 8-6, giving the Cougars a 1–0 lead heading into singles.

Azusa Pacific carried that momentum into singles, securing wins on courts two, one and three to clinch the match. Flores Monteverde fell on court two (0-6, 2-6), Guerrero Melgar dropped his match on court one (3-6, 1-6), and Adam Large was defeated on court three (4-6, 1-6) as the Cougars reached the four-point mark needed to clinch the championship.

Three additional singles matches went unfinished, with Pol Masafret Hernandez, Juan Vallejo and Thiago Canessa still battling when the match was decided.

The Eagles capped an impressive performance at the conference championship, finishing as the runners-up.
