Men's Swimming & Diving

Diving, Relays Highlight Day One At PCSC

Shane Brinson records a third-place finish and relays impress at the conference meet.

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. --- The Pacific Collegiate Swim & Dive Conference Championship got underway on Wednesday evening at East Los Angeles College with some diving events and a handful of relays.

The men's 3-meter dive was the first event up and Biola's Shane Brinson ended up finishing third overall with a score of 226.95. There was quite a bit of separation between Brinson and the fourth place diver, but he finished just 10 points back from UC Santa Cruz's Eli Cirino in second place.

Outside of the diving Head Coach Emily Mosbacher had men and women's teams competing in the 200-medley and 800-medley relays and the men's 50-freestyle time trials.

The men's relays posted the highest finish of the night. They placed fifth overall in the 200-medley relay with a 1:39.19 and fifth in the 800-freestyle relay with a 7:12.32.

The 200-medley team of Matthew Roe, Raymond Kam, Daniel Vale and Tom Franicevich finished just two seconds behind Concordia-Irvine and four seconds back of UC Santa Cruz as they pushed close to a top-3 finish.

Fanicevich and Kam also led the 800-freestyle relay, and they were joined by Andrew Benson and Michael Severi to finish behind UC San Diego, Fresno Pacific, UC Santa Cruz and Concordia-Irvine's top teams.

The women's top team in both of those relays also found itself finishing in an identical spot. The Eagles finished in ninth place in both relays, completing the 200-medley relay in 1:50.33 and the 800-freestlye relay in 7:59.13.

The 200-medley relay was incredibly competitive, with all of the top 10 teams finishing within eight seconds of one another. The Eagles' top team of Rachel Stinchcomb, Emily Silzel, Rebecca Brandt and Lisa Tixier finished just a few seconds back of a top-5 finish. They were within striking distance of Alaska-Fairbanks, Azusa Pacific, Dixie State and Pepperdine.

Biola gets back into the pool for a full day of competition on Thursday. On the schedule is the 500-freestyle, 200-IM, 50-freestyle and 200-freestyle relay in addition to some more diving.
