Eagles Gain Experience In Azusa

Biola suffers an 8-1 loss on a road to a talented Azusa Pacific team.

AZUSA, Calif. --- Playing its second match in as many days, following a grueling and lengthy 5-4 loss to Concordia-Irvine yesterday, Biola Men's Tennis had to travel to Azusa on Wednesday afternoon for a battle with Azusa Pacific.

The Cougars earned an 8-1 victory to improve to 5-0 on the season, while Head Coach David Goodman's squad falls to 1-3.

"We just got outplayed today," said Goodman. "APU plays a faster paced game than the teams we have played so far. It was difficult for us to adapt to their play and they forced us into making many errors."

The Eagles' lone victory of the day came at No. 3 singles as Derek James continued his strong start to the 2017 season with his fourth win in a row. He defeated his opponent in straight sets, winning the opening set 6-4 and then battling through some extra play to take the second set 7-5.

"Derek's match was the highlight of the day," said Goodman. "He has been playing extremely well since the start of the season. His focus and intensity have really helped him achieve a higher level to his game."

The other closest chance for a victory for the Eagles came at No. 1 doubles. The Eagles' familiar No. 1 pairing of Lucas Lee and Luke Mountain remained in the match until the very end suffering an 8-6 loss.

Biola will have one full day to refocus and come up with a game plan for its next match when it hosts Chapman on Friday at 2:00 p.m.
