Bishop, Rodriguez Earn Golf's First All-GSAC Honors

Austin Bishop, a freshman, and Jasmine Rodriguez, a senior, earn all-conference recognition.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was a historic season for both Biola golf programs as the men set a record for season scoring average and the women won their first tournament and placed second at the Golden State Athletic Conference Championship tournament.

The icing on the cake came late Monday night as the GSAC released its all-conference teams for both genders. Five women and seven men received all-conference recognition for the 2015-16 season and Biola's Jasmine Rodriguez and Austin Bishop were counted among those totals.

Rodriguez and Bishop have the honor of being the first student-athletes in the history of Biola golf to take home all-conference recognition, because this is the first season the GSAC has sponsored golf and a golf championship.

It will be the only All-GSAC honors for Rodriguez as the senior just finished off her brilliant four-year career last week by leading all Biola scorers at the GSAC Tournament. She shot a 78 in the final round of her career to sneak up to sixth place and help ensure her spot on this all-conference team.

Rodriguez shot three strokes better than her career average during her senior season. She recorded three top-10 finishes in seven events played and averaged a round of 85 through her 16 rounds played. She also set a new career low with a round of 76 back in October.

"It's been a joy to watch Jasmine grow as a player and as a person," said women's head coach Jane Carr. "She's maintained the No. 1 position for most of this past season. She's made an incredible contribution to this team and I couldn't be prouder of her selection for this award."

Bishop has a chance to win another All-GSAC honor as he just completed his freshman season this year. It was a fantastic freshman season that saw him average a round of 75.96 and record one top-5 and one top-10 finish.

His career began with a bang as he finished first at the ACU Firestorm Fall Invitational powered by a 69 he shot in just his second collegiate round. He would go on to shoot 20 of his 24 rounds in the 70s in a very consistent season.

"Austin is a very good player with a love for his teammates also," said men's head coach Hank Woodrome. "He had a fine freshman year and is also a good student. He battled through some illness this year without missing a single tournament and recorded four top-15 finishes this year."

The freshman had a disappointing start to the Golden State Athletic Conference tournament that caused him to finish 18th in the final event of the 2015-16 season, but it will likely cause him to come out swinging next fall.

The Biola Golf season has concluded for this season, but the schedule will resume in September 2016.
