Records Fall As Eagles Finish Invite

Two new program records are set as the Eagles finished up at the Winter Invite.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- Biola Swim & Dive had the chance to experience the rarity of competing on a Sunday this week as they finished off the 2016 Collegiate Winter Invite at East LA College on this fourth day of December.

The highlight of the final part of this competition was two new school records being set. The first one was actually set in prelims on Saturday as Rachel Stinchcomb set a new school mark in the 100-backstroke (:58.47). With that swim she broke one of the two longest standing Biola school records. The record was set during the 2010-11 season.

Raymond Kam broke the other record of the meet on Sunday evening during time trials. The newcomer swam the 200-butterfly in 1:55.39 to break Charlie Nanfria's mark set at the 2015 NAIA National Championships. Coincidentally enough, this record was tied for the most recent record on the men's side.

The team also upped its total number of new national qualification times to an incredible 31 over the last three days of competition.

"Incredible meet all around," said Head Coach Emily Mosbacher. "Going into this meet,we expected season best times, and one of the goals was to earn more Nationals qualification times, but we were blown away by how many more than just a few qualified and by how much."

One of the most exciting events of the day was the men's 100-freestyle. The Eagles took up three of the top-6 spots in the finals as Tom Franicevich, Michael Severi and Andrew Benson finished fourth, fifth and sixth in the event. All three guys touched the wall within 1.12 seconds of each other as their times ranged from :47.11 to :48.23.

That trio of guys joined Daniel Vale to swim the 400-freestyle relay in 3:13.60 to finish second in another strong event for BU. These strong swims on the guys side would ultimately add up to 395 points and a fifth-place finish for Mosbacher's squad.

Lisa Tixier added another individual win to her collection as she took the 100-freestyle by almost a full second by swimming a :51.55. Sammy Dammann also earned a top-3 individual finish for the women by swimming 2:08.95 to place third in the 200-butterfly.

The women finished fifth of nine teams with 367.5 points.

"The team has put in so much hard work and effort into the season so far, and it is finally showing and paying off," said Mosbacher. "I am incredibly proud of each athlete on the team and am excited about where we are at in this point of the season as we finish out the first semester and head into January. We have more work to do, but a whole lot more to look forward to."

This was the final competition of the fall portion of the Eagles' schedule. They will return for a meet against Azusa Pacific, Concordia-Irvine and SOKA on January 21.
