Box Score ROCKLIN, Calif. --- After a quick hour-long flight to Sacramento and an afternoon spent in Old Town Sacramento No. 1 Biola Volleyball took care of business against Golden State Athletic Conference foe William Jessup, finishing the Warriors in three sets (25-18, 25-19, 25-14) for the Eagles' seventh sweep in a row.
Â
"It was our first true road match of the year and I liked the energy and thought we played with good focus," said Head Coach
Aaron Seltzer. "We ended well, we started well and the middle we worked through."
Â
The Eagles controlled the match from early on, as they took set one from the Warriors, 25-18. The first set saw a Warriors offense that struggle to find its rhythm as it posted a hitting percentage of just -.074 and had just five kills in the set.
Â
Christina DenBoer and
Tess Van Grouw took care of business in the early going, leading the Eagles in kills and digs through the first of the three frames.
Â
The hardest fought point of the night came midway through set one as
Joclyn Kirton buried one into the hardwood to make it a 16-9 game after a tremendous back-and-forth between the two sides that included about five different sprawling receptions by Van Grouw and
Alex Brehaut.
Â
The second set was a bit more competitive as the two teams battled for every point early on. The turning point of the second frame came when the Eagles got three straight points off Jessup mishits to take a 15-12 advantage in the set that had traded point for point up until then.
Â
A Biola block, kill and an ace continued to extend that lead as
Tess Van Grouw's right arm got a little extra work on the serve for six straight points. After that, WJU had a mini run of its own that got them back within two points, but a huge swing from
Lauren Hoenecke stymied that.
Â
The serve was the story of set number two, which featured service aces and service errors, including one from WJU that ended the set at 25-19.
Â
After the Eagles dropped the initial point of the third set they rattled off eight in a row with Brehaut serving to take a commanding 8-1 lead as they looked to lock the match down.
Â
The Eagles' outside hitters were critical in building the late lead, especially
Britta Blaser who had three of her six kills in set number three. Ultimately, Biola went on to win the final frame 25-14 in its best hitting set of the evening.
Â
For the match Biola outhit the Warriors .261 to -.044, which was aided by the Eagles' back row's ability to dig the WJU attacks with consistency. Van Grouw led Biola with 11 digs, which is her first double-digit dig outing since Sept. 4 and her sixth of the season.
Â
Lauren Hoenecke had a strong night with seven kills and a .417 hitting percentage. She also added a block in a game that didn't have much blocking as the two teams combined for just five total stuffs.
Â
Â
"I give a lot of credit to our assistant coach
Abbie Wright," said Seltzer. "She was very prepared for this match, and she had the girls ready. She's been putting in a lot of time and effort into that."
Â
With the victory the Eagles improve to 11-0 (3-0 GSAC) and drop the Warriors to 4-9 (0-3 GSAC). Biola continues its Northern California road trip on Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. match at Menlo.
