Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Eagles were having so much fun being back on the volleyball court that they just wanted to stay there all day long, or so it seemed during No. 2 Biola's second five-set victory of opening day.
Â
Biola traded sets with No. 5 Rocky Mountain before ultimately claiming the prized victory with a come-from-behind fifth-set victory (25-16, 23-25, 15-25, 25-22, 15-12).
Â
The moment of the match came when back-to-back blocks helped Biola break a 10-10 tie in set no. 5 to get a two-point advantage that propelled them onto victory. Those two blocks came after RMC already had four different leads through the beginning stages of the fifth set.
Â
Getting a hand on both of those blocks (one solo, one assist) was newcomer
Ally Forsberg. She was seeing her first action of the season in that set as Head Coach
Aaron Seltzer entered the CSU Fullerton transfer at middle blocker.
Â
"I think the girls are figuring things out, and so are the coaches," said Seltzer. "It took us a little while to figure some things out, but eventually we did. I think Ally came in and played awesome in the middle for us."
Â
After the blocks the teams went just about point-for-point through the end of the match, with
Alyssa Mason coming up with the match-winning kill off a set by
Ashton Arbuthnot.
Â
Mason slid back over to outside hitter late in the match after seeing some time in the middle. She took advantage of being back and home and posted a phenomenal attacking performance in the nightcap. She led the team with 19 kills and hit .368.
Â
As a whole, Biola's attack was much improved from its showing earlier in the day, hitting at least .263 in four of the five sets and well above that in most.
Â
Joclyn Kirton and
Britta Blaser were also key contributors to the attack, each adding at least 15 kills. Kirton was especially on point, drilling 17 of her 36 attempts into the floor with just one error.
Â
"Everyone had to play tonight. We pulled every person that was able to play tonight to play," said Seltzer. "It was a great team effort with a lot of hard work tonight. They just grinded it out on a very mentally taxing day."
Â
Arbuthnot had a solid game as Biola's go-to setter. She had 35 assists with just one error and added three service aces. Biola got seven service aces and allowed just one to the Battlin' Bears.
Tess Van Grouw's 21 digs and
Alex Brehaut's nine had a little something to do with the Eagles' ability to stop that attack.
Â
All in all it was a solid-enough performance to earn a win. The Eagles looked shaky in sets two and three and lost a bit of confidence, but a comeback win in the final five points will sure go a long way to help that.
Â
The Eagles improve to 2-0 with the victory and drop the Battlin' Bears to 0-2. Biola plays two games tomorrow, facing Davenport at 2:00 p.m. and Great Falls at 6:00 p.m.
