IRVINE, Calif. --- Biola Volleyball earned its second-consecutive sweep on Friday morning, defeating Cal State Monterey Bay in straight sets (25-14, 25-18, 27-25) at the Vanguard/Concordia Kick-Off Tournament.
The Eagles controlled the match offensively, finishing with 45 kills on a .291 hitting percentage while holding the Otters to 30 kills and an .080 clip. Biola improved to 3-2 on the season with the victory.
The opening set was tied 7-7 before Biola began to pull away. A seven-point run behind the serving of Lexi Lambert gave the Eagles a 14-7 advantage, with Lambert recording back-to-back aces while Hannah Hanson added two kills during the stretch. Biola never looked back, hitting .333 with 18 kills before Juliana Van Ommering closed out the 25-14 win with a kill.
Biola carried the momentum into the second set, jumping out to a 6-1 lead. Madison Moore provided an immediate spark after entering the match, recording three early kills as the Eagles extended their advantage. BU built its lead as large as nine at 21-12 before closing out the frame 25-18.
The third set provided Biola's biggest test of the morning. Cal State Monterey Bay worked its way in front and eventually held a 20-16 advantage, but the Eagles responded with five-straight points to even the score at 21-21.
The Otters reached set point at 24-23, but Moore answered with a kill to keep Biola alive. She then took over down the stretch, recording each of the Eagles' final four points from 24-24 onward to secure the 27-25 victory and complete the sweep.
Van Ommering and Moore led the Biola attack with 12 kills apiece. Van Ommering hit .500 with just one error on 22 attacks, while Moore was even more efficient at .526 with 12 kills on 19 swings despite appearing in only two sets.
Hanson directed the offense with a team-high 22 assists and added four kills and nine digs. Lambert contributed 15 assists, six digs and two service aces, while Knevelbaard led the Eagles defensively with 11 digs. Beebe added nine digs and a service ace.
Biola improved to 3-2 on the season with the win.
