Making Waves At Mangrum

Biola grabs three new national qualifications in its last regular season meet.

SAN MARCOS, Calif. --- It was Biola's final chance to get some practice in before the Golden State Athletic Conference championship meet as the team competed at the 2015 Mangrum Invitational.

Biola's student-athletes got two individual national qualifiers and added another 'A' qualifying relay team at the invite hosted by CSU San Marcos.

The women's 4x800m relay team of Alisa Murray, Anika Gasner, Kathleen Bell and Kellian Hunt posted a 9:17.67 to hit the national qualifying mark and win the race by three seconds over CSU San Marcos' 'A' team.

Gasner hit another 'A' qualifier in the 1,500m, running a 4:38.56 to place fourth in the race.

"We were happy to see many of our student-athletes come back from break and hit the ground running," said Assistant Coach Collin Christensen. "There is room from improvement, but there were lots of positives to go with."

Kate Smiley was the Eagles' other national qualifier on the day. She finished fifth in the 200m with a :25.03 to hit the 'B' qualifying standard.

On the men's side Brandon Berz made an impact with a second-place finish in the 3,00m steeplechase (9:51.00). Andrew Cecil had another top finish, coming in seventh in the shot put with a toss of 12.67m.

The Eagles' next event is at April 24-25's GSAC Championship meet.
