LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Despite the fact that its played six matches in seven days and the weather at the Biola Tennis Center was draining, Biola men's tennis played extremely well in an 8-1 victory over Pacific Lutheran on Wednesday.
Â
It was a 10:00 a.m. matchup in La Mirada, but the sun was up and shining bright and hot throughout, but the Eagles' game was just as hot in a runaway victory to put the team two games above .500 with just five regular season matches left to play.
Â
The win moved Biola to 10-8 on the season, which eclipsed 2014's tally of nine match victories, which was a record for most team victories in a season.
Â
"The boys played great today," said Head Coach
Brent Worthington. "They were tired, but they came out ready to play and performed well."
Â
Biola won five of the six singles matches and swept doubles in another dominant day on the court. The only loss they suffered was at No. 1 singles, where
Tayven Townsend dropped his match in straight sets, 3-6; 1-6.
Â
After Townsend it was all successes all the way down the lineup for Worthington's squad, highlighted by a 6-0; 6-0 win for
Luke Mountain at the No. 4 position. It is Mountain's third perfect victory in as many days.
Â
Brandon Chang played in the most competitive singles match of the morning, taking his win in straight sets over James Okubo, but not until after gutting out 7-5 victories in each set.
Â
"Brandon again showed great heart by winning a close match that required both mental and physical toughness," said Worthington. "He's played extremely well the past two weeks."
Â
Philip Westwood,
Joe Turnquist and
David Garcia each added another win to their singles winning streaks.
Â
Doubles was another venture of success for the squad, shutting down the Lutes in 8-3 and 8-0 wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions and Garcia and Turnquist escaped with an 8-5 win at the No. 3 slot.
Â
Biola becomes 10-8 this season with the victory and the Lutes fall to 2-11. The Eagles have a few days to catch their breath again before hosting San Diego Christian at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Biola will look to avenge a 3-6 loss suffered to the Hawks earlier this season.
