Biola takes two of three doubles matches to get out to a quick start in 7-2 win over Principia.

Phillip Westwood won his singles match at No. 2 despite having a hard time physically.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola exhibited its toughness all over the courts on Thursday, gutting out a few very close singles matches to secure a 7-2 win over Principia that leaves the Eagles just one game shy of being back at .500.

Biola breezed through doubles competition as all three matches had an 8-2 final score and the Eagles got wins at No. 2 and No. 3.

Then, the Eagles got off to a very fast start in single play and were able to clinch the match just three matches into the singles competition as Luke Mountain defeated Daniel Drake in a set one tiebreak and dominated to a 6-1 win in set two.

"Luke fought off some illness in his first set to win the tiebreak, and then he played great tennis to win the second set easily," said Head Coach Brent Worthington.

Mountain wasn't the only player that had to fight against his own body in singles competition. Phillip Westwood had to go to three sets with his opponent and almost couldn't make it through as he began to cramp in the middle of an up-and-down third set.

He got down 1-4 in that deciding set, but worked his way back to get a win in the tiebreak. The win helped him move to an even 5-5 in singles play in 2015, including a 2-1 mark at No. 2, which is where he played on Thursday.

"It was one of the hardest fought matches I've seen someone play," said Worthington. "It was all about his heart and toughness to win at that point, since he could not serve and could barely win."

The Eagles also got singles wins from Tayven Townsend, Joe Turnquist and David Garcia as they cruised to their second win in a row. Biola improved to 5-6 with the victory and pushed the Panthers to a 1-4 mark.

Biola has no time to rest as they host the University of Rochester on Friday at 2:00 p.m.
