LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Brent Worthington era of men's tennis at Biola begins with a success, after the Eagles work their way through Hastings College (Neb.), 7-2, in the season-opener.
 
"Overall it was a great team win and a good start to the season," said Worthington.
 
It was a solid team effort throughout, with the Eagles dropping one match of doubles and one match of singles in a consistent day on the courts.
 
There were a bunch of new faces at the Biola Tennis Center as the top-6 were split three new players and three returning student-athletes.
 
Worthington played all of his returning players at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3, and left his three new guys at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6. As the season winds on that lineup may change, but at the moment it seemed to work out well for the Eagles.
 
The match began with doubles, with the two teams splitting the first two doubles matchups to come to completion. David Garcia and Joe Turnquist earned a gutsy 9-8 (7-5) win at No. 3 doubles while the Eagles' No. 2 doubles pairing fell 5-8.
 
"David and Joe were awesome," said Worthington. "They fought off three match points before winning and gave us the energy to win our second doubles match and head into singles."
 
Veterans Tayven Townsend and Brandon Chang got that 8-5 victory at No. 1 doubles in a back-and-forth battle that sent Biola into singles play with a 2-1 advantage in the match.
 
Biola's only loss in singles came at the No. 1 spot, where the Broncos' No. 1, McKay Inman was on point throughout the match, taking it 6-1; 6-4. That loss did not matter much, as it finished up after newcomer Phillip Westwood earned a victory at No. 4 singles to get the Eagles' clinching fifth point. Westwood defeated the other Inman brother in straight sets, 6-0; 7-5.
 
Also earning singles wins for Biola were Luke Mountain, Chang, Garcia and Turnquist. The singles wins helped Garcia and Turnquist finish 2-0 in their very first collegiate match.
 
Mountain and Chang each required more than the two sets to earn their singles wins, as Moutain won his third set 6-0 and Chang won a super tiebreak in his match, 10-8.
 
The Eagles jump right back in action with a Golden State Athletic Conference match tomorrow, hosting Arizona Christian at the Biola Tennis Center at 1:00 p.m.
