LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Playing its second match in as many days, Biola Men's Tennis got a chance to face top notch competition yet again, with NCAA DII BYU-Hawaii visiting the Biola Tennis Center.
Â
The Eagles played the Seasiders close in nearly every matchup, but ultimately fell short, 1-8. The one match win snaps a streak of two consecutive full matches where the team has not registered a point, but Head Coach
Brent Worthington thinks they could have gotten even more points out there on Saturday.
Â
"This match easily could have been 4-5 instead of 1-8," said Worthington. "This way by far our best tennis and best effort against a ranked opponent this year."
Â
The Eagles' lone win came at No. 3 doubles, where
Joe Turnquist and
David Garcia squeaked away with an 8-6 victory. It is the pairings' second win this season, improving their mark to 2-3.
Â
"David and Joe's win was huge, as it kept us in the match heading into singles," said Worthington.
Biola would lose all six singles matches, but two Eagles made the Seasiders start to sweat it out. Phillip Westwood split the first two sets at No. 3 before falling in the tiebreak. It was the same story for Garcia at No. 6. Both of Biola's players had a match point that they failed to convert.
Â
It was a match that Biola was not supposed to be too competitive in, but the Eagles put forth a good showing and continue to mature under a young coach and with a young team. Playing a ranked NCAA DII team will go along way in aiding Biola's ability to compete against the best the NAIA has to offer.
Â
"Although the score didn't come out too well this was a great match for us today," said Worthington. "We came out, competed and made BYU-Hawaii play good tennis."
Â
The Eagles have lost four straight and now sit a 3-4 on the year. BYU-Hawaii improved to 5-1 on the season, with their lone loss coming to UC San Diego.
