Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- "This is our house. This is our house." That was the repeated cry from a packed house at Chase Gymnasium on Tuesday night as No. 6 Biola Volleyball steamrolled No. 4 Vanguard to put on a show for the adoring fans in the stands.
Â
It was easily one of the best, if not the absolute best, performances of the season for Head Coach
Aaron Seltzer's side as the Eagles successfully avenged their 1-3 loss at Vanguard from earlier in the season with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-19, 25-19) drubbing of a team that had not lost since August.
Â
"It reminded me of our match against Missouri Baptist (W, 3-1)," said Head Coach
Aaron Seltzer. "That was about as good as we could play against a very good team. I think Abbie did a fantastic job of preparing our setters and serving game tonight. She was invaluable in her ability to tactically outmaneuver Vanguard."
Â
Â
The large and loud crowd turned up for the Eagles' senior night as the team played in its final home match of the season and honored its eight final year players. This made for an emotionally charged atmosphere that immediately set the Lions off kilter.
Â
Vanguard had fewer kills than it had attack errors in the first half as they hit -.037 in a set that was dominated by Biola from beginning to end. Mental mistakes were the theme of the night for the Vanguard squad that has seemed impervious to such errors throughout much of the season to this point. Tonight they combined for 19 attack errors, five receiving errors, four setting errors and a handful of blocking errors and service errors.
Â
"They haven't lost in a few months, so they've been playing very well," said Seltzer. "To be able to maintain that for that long of a stretch of time is difficult. We had things a little different this time around. Alyssa was more healthy, and
Becca Branch now has a month under her belt."
Â
Biola managed to remain immune from any major errors throughout the one hour and 11 minute match. The Eagles hit .407 as a team and were operating like clockwork as they executed Seltzer and Assistant Coach
Abbie Wright's gameplan.
Â
The biggest change what the Eagles' consistent setting of its right side hitters.
Becca Branch and
Ashton Arbuthnot looked for
Karly Dantuma and
Britta Blaser all night long and found the ready to swing hard and swing well as both attackers had huge performances.
Â
"We identified and committed to setting the right side," said Seltzer. "Karly and Britta came to play today. That could be the most dominating performance from a tandem of right sides we've ever had. Karly was unstoppable and Britta was being typical Britta, just bombing balls all over the place."
Â
Dantuma had a night to remember as the freshman compiled 10 kills on 17 attacks with zero errors and also go in on two of Biola's nine team blocks. Blaser was also on point as she tied for the team-lead with 11 kills. She also did not have any attack errors.
Â
The setters were also able to find their middles with consistency against a Lions defense that was holy all throughout the night.
Alyssa Mason was the other Eagle with 11 kills and hit a nice, clean .600 to further improve her nation-leading hitting percentage.
Lauren Hoenecke also added five kills to go with five blocks in a great senior night for her.
Â
"We controlled their game a little bit and we sided out very well," said Seltzer. "We began preparing for this the minute we lost to them. We took a look at all the things they did well against us and have been working against that."
Â
The win is an emotional high that puts a capper on what's been an up-and-down Golden State Athletic Conference season. The team finishes 14-2 in conference play and 8-0 at home. That 8-0 home mark extended Biola's home winning streak to 21 matches.
Â
Vanguard still has one match to play (Hope International) and leads Biola in the GSAC standings by one game (14-1). The GSAC standings will be finalized after Vanguard's senior night on Saturday evening.
Â
For Biola the next, and final, match of the regular season comes this Thursday night at Life Pacific College in San Dimas, California.
