Box Score LONG BEACH, Calif. --- It was Biola's game to win throughout on Thursday afternoon as they went head-to-head with the Mariners of Marymount College, eventually gritting out a 2-1 victory despite giving up a late goal to MC.
Â
"Overall, it was a solid offensive and defensive performance by Biola," said Head Coach
Todd Elkins.
Â
Returning All-GSAC midfielder,
Amanda Lillicrop, played a pivotal role in both of Biola's goals in the contest, earning two assists on the afternoon, her second an third of this young season.
Â
The first goal came early on and got Biola ahead in its second semi-neutral site match of the season. She received a pass on the left wing from
Miranda Starbeck and directed it into the box where
Taylor Venegas headed it home past the Mariners outstretched keeper.
Â
The second goal, which turned out to be the game-winner, came just 22 minutes later, and in a very similar fashion. Although, this time Lillicrop got a pass in from
Amanda Otto on the right side, and the finish came off the foot of
Brittney Sayre, who slotted the ball home past a keeper after getting a perfectly placed pass between two Marymount defenders.
Â
This was Venegas' third goal of the season and Sayre's second and first game-winner. The Eagles have outscored their opponents 13-2 through the first three contests of the year.
Â
This 2-0 lead gave the Eagles and starting keeper,
Marina Rodriguez, a healthy and comfortable lead headed into halftime and the remainder of the contest. The comfort level remained until Marymount pushed home a goal in the 85
th minute by winning the header on a 50-50 ball.
Â
Rodriguez got the win to move her personal record to 3-0 on the season. Biola women's soccer also improves to 3-0, while pushing the Mariners to 1-3 in 2014.
Â
The Eagles next competition will be in a friendly alumni game on Sept. 6, but they get back to serious competition Sept. 10 when they host Southern Oregon at 7:00 p.m. SOU is currently 1-2, getting outscored 8-5 through three matches.
