LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Warriors of Lewis-Clark State College made the trek to La Mirada from Idaho, and made it worth their time as they tacked on two wins over Biola's men and women's tennis teams.
The Eagles' men's team fell in a competitive 6-3 match, while the women were only able to win one match on the afternoon and fell, 8-1.
"They are a team who plays high-percentage tennis, which makes them hard to beat," said Women's Head Coach
Dee Henry. "Our players gained a great deal from today's experience."
The women's team got off to a decent start, picking up their match in at No. 2 doubles to go 1-2 in doubles play to open the match. However, the Eagles were unable to gain any sort of traction as the No. 14 Warriors took each singles competition fairly handily in six straight-set victories.
Susan Carmichael and
Kathryn Ashford combined at the No. 2 doubles slot as the only Eagles to experience victory on Tuesday evening. They utilized their seamless team play to get their ninth win of the season and fourth in a row in a very close 9-8 match.
The match on the men's side was a little bit more competitive as the Eagles had a shot to win the match if a few more games went their way.
"This match was a good test for us," said Head Coach David Goodman. "I think it was one of the better matches we've played all season long."
Biola was able to get wins at No. 2 doubles and No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Isaiah Pekary played well to force a third set at No. 2 singles, but ultimately fell just short of making it an even closer contest.
Luke Mountain got a convincing straight-set win over Haseeb Khan, with two decisive set victories. Tayven Townsend came in at No. 4 singles and played patient tennis to outlast Tandin Wang Chuk in a three-set win.
Mountain, along with Lucas Lee, also tacked on one win in doubles against the Warriors' losing singles players.
"As a team we came together and played well as a group," said Goodman. "A few games here and there made the difference between winning and losing."
The loss comes on the day that the Eagles forced their way back into the national conversation, receiving votes in the Top 25 poll for the second time this season.
The losses move Biola's men's team to 7-11 and drop the women's contingent to 6-13. Both teams have a chance to get back in their winning ways with home matches against Arizona Christian on Friday.
