Breaking Even

Biola improves to 5-5 with a dominant win over Austin College on its third straight day of tennis.

Tayven Townsend has a bounce-back match with a straight-set sweep on Saturday.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola has played full matches in each of the last three days, but that did not stop the Eagles from coming out with tenacity and lots of energy to start their match with Austin College on Saturday.

The extra energy in singles play helped Biola gain a 4-2 advantage heading out of singles play and into doubles, an area that they swept in a 7-2 win over University of the Southwest just yesterday.

Biola did not quite sweep doubles, but won 2-of-3 in order to down the Roos 6-3 and improve to 5-5 on the season.

"It is tough to play three days in a row, so to start fast was key for us," said Head Coach David Goodman. "We came out with tons of energy throughout singles and got off to a great start."

The Eagles got points from Lucas Lee, Luke Mountain, Tayven Townsend and Brandon Chang to give them the advantage at singles. Those four student-athletes are now a combined 13-21 on the season. That record is skewed downward by the number of matches Biola has already had against some of the top-ranked talent in the nation. The quartet has a record of 10-12 outside of GSAC competition.

Tayven Townsend stood out among the other four with his dominant straight-set sweep of Jeffrey Kubena today. He did not allow a single point from the Roos' freshman No. 4.

"It was good to see Tayven bounce back after a couple tough matches," said Goodman. "We are growing as a team and getting better each match. I am excited to see where we go from here."

The Eagles have just one day to recoup from this bust stretch, as they take on Rensselaer Polytechnic on Monday afternoon at the Biola Tennis Center.
