Last Set Loss

Biola falls for the fourth straight time in a tough 5-4 match against McPherson College.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It came down to the very last possible set on Tuesday night under the lights, and Biola lost a tough 5-4 match to the McPherson Bulldogs.

The two teams were tied at four headed into the final singles match at No. 6. Chris Evans was slated to face Jaime Roman in the deciding match, and he put up an ultimate fight but could not get the win in the three-set match.

Roman took the first set by the slimmest of margins in a 7-6 set win before Evans stormed to a 6-3 win in the second set to force a third. The match finale was not much of a fight as Roman got the 6-1 win to secure the close win for the Bulldogs.

"I thought we played well," said Head Coach David Goodman. "5-4 losses are always tough, but I think we can take a lot of positive things out of this match."

The Eagles got solid play in one aspect of their game they have been working to improve, doubles. Biola took No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take the lead heading into singles play.

The two wins at doubles helped those four athletes involved in the matches improve to a combined 6-5 mark on the seasons.

Biola missed its normal No. 1 singles player as it had to shift its lineup against the Bulldogs. The singles changes resulted in the Eagles only being able to take two of the four contests, eventually leading McPherson to the one-point win.

The Eagles' two wins came at No. 3 and No. 4 singles and helped Brandon Chang win his seventh win of the season and Tayven Townsend secure his fifth win of the 2014 campaign.

Biola's loss drops it to 5-9 on the season and leaves the team definitely needing a win in next Tuesday's home match with Hope International.
