Rensselaer Engineers A Win Over Eagles

Biola drops one to the No. 30 team in the NCAA Division III to fall to 5-6.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was a tough way for Biola to follow up a win that gave it a .500 record for the first time since the beginning of February, but the Eagles put in some good work in their Monday afternoon match against Rensselaer Polytechnic.

The Engineers took the match 7-2 after sweeping Biola in doubles competition and winning some close matches in singles play.

"RPI was a solid team," said Head Coach David Goodman. "They were solid in doubles, and they just outplayed us."

Rensselaer used eight different players over the course of the singles and doubles competition to garner their points. They had to make some changes to their singles lineup following the tough doubles matchups in the grueling sun.

The Eagles did not stand much of a chance in doubles as the Engineers cruised to three victories by significant margins– 8-1, 8-4, 8-5.

Things would not get any easier in singles as Biola had to square off with the lineup of the No. 30 team in the NCAA Division III.

Each match put up a fight for Biola, with two of Biola's losses including a set that had to go to tiebreakers.

Luke Mountain and Tayven Townsend continued their strong play as of late by getting the Eagles' two points at No. 3 and No. 4 singles.

The two of them are now a combined 5-1 in singles since March 7.

"Luke and Tayven stepped up big to get a few wins for us," said Goodman.

The Eagles are now 5-6 on the season, and will look to get back on a winning streak in their match against the Whittier Poets on Wednesday. The match is at 2 p.m. and is held in Whittier.
