VISTA, Calif. --- Biola's men's golf team shook the rust off of their drivers and hit the links to re-open their season at the CSU San Marcos Cougar Invitational on Monday and Tuesday.
 
While they finished in 12^th place out of 12 teams, Head Coach Jeff Anderson found some positives in the performance of his student-athletes in their first tournament since October.
 
"It was a pretty strong field. I'm proud of my players as they all improved their scores each round," said Anderson. "
 
Texas Wesleyan University ended up winning the tournament by leading all teams in scoring over the final two rounds. They bested the host school by 11 strokes in order to win the tournament championship.
 
Pedro Oviedo rode two 71s (-1) in order to take the individual crown, but his Holy Names team still finished in just fourth place. Texas Wesleyan had three players in the top five to help them to the win.
 
William Langworthy, Lucas Kinan and Max Allen all finished bunched up together in ties for 55^th and 57^th place. Langworthy shot an 81 and two 83s to end with a 247, and the others each ended with a 248. Kinan shot Biola's lowest round of the championship with a 79 in the second round.
 
Kevin Vandekamp rounded out Biola's scores with a 269. He was set back by a rough first round, but improved steadily in the second two.
 
"It was the first tournament back after break, so the boys are still shaking off the rust, but I am proud of their efforts," said Anderson. "The course was playing really tough as it was cold and windy."
 
The Eagles have nearly a full month off to prepare for their next time out. They will play in The Master's College Spring Invitational in early March.
 
Until then, they will work on their game while focusing on the strengths of their individual performances.
 
"We have a lot of practice time between now and then, so I know we will be ready," said Anderson.
