Double Down

Biola got two of its three match points in doubles, keyed by a win by Ashford and Carmichael.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola caught a break on Tuesday afternoon, when one of No. 9 Vanguard's student-athletes was unable to make the trip to the match with the Eagles. Biola ended up earning wins via defeat at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles because of in, on its way to an eventual 6-3 loss.

The loss is Biola's fifth consecutive setback to start the season, and drops the team to 0-3 in Golden State Athletic Conference play.

Kathryn Ashford and Susan Carmichael combined at No. 2 doubles to get the Eagles' only true match win of the afternoon. They paired up for their first doubles win of the season, as they took down Ashley Wao-Udin and Brook Ferslov, 9-7.

"Susan and Kat made key adjustments and worked together very effectively," said Head Coach Dee Henry. "Vanguard is solid all the way up and down their lineup, but our players' rally pace was right there with them."

Vanguard took each of the other matches fairly easily, putting up five perfect sets on the afternoon, and winning No. 1 doubles by four points.

The Eagles swing back into action on Saturday, as they host NCAA Division II opponent BYU-Hawai'i.
