Lions Rule Over The Court

Vanguard doesn't drop a single set as they roll over Biola, 9-0.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was a tall order facing Biola on Tuesday afternoon as they hosted the No. 3 Lions of Vanguard. The match ended up being as tough as it looked on paper, as the Eagles fell 9-0 to VUSC.

For the most part the Lions made quick work of the Eagles, with the only exception coming at No. 1 singles.

Lucas Lee matched up with Stefan Kilchhofer at that spot and played Vanguard's top player well, forcing a tiebreak in the first set. After a 7-6 loss in set one, Lee was not able to keep up in the second set at all, falling 6-2.

"Lucas played extremely well and competed at a high level," said Head Coach David Goodman. "Vanguard's No. 1 is the best player in the conference and among the top five in the country. For Lucas to play this well should give him tons of confidence going forward."

Vanguard dominated the rest of the slate, picking up five perfect 6-0 sets in singles play. The Lions outscored Biola 73-17 in the singles matches, going the whole time without dropping a single set.

The doubles matchups did not go well either for the Eagles. The lower two doubles pairings each experienced 8-1 losses and No. 1 doubles fought to an 8-2 defeat.

"We need to compete at a higher level to make these matches more competitive," said Goodman.

The win improves Vanguard to 3-1 overall (3-0 GSAC) and drops Biola back under .500 at 2-3 (1-2 GSAC).

The Eagles continue their four-game homestretch by hosting former-Golden State Athletic Conference member Fresno Paciifc on Thursday afternoon.
