LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Women's tennis got the ball rolling on its new season on Saturday morning, losing 2-7 to the Cal Tech Beavers.
Maura Lopez stood out on the day, winning both her single and doubles contest.
Â
"Maura (Lopez), who is in her fourth season on the team, came from behind on several occasions today," said Head Coach
Dee Henry. "The key for her was to realize the importance of adjusting and focusing on the point she was playing."
Â
Lopez teamed with
Paige Erickson to win their doubles matchup in the third doubles contest of the match, providing a late spark for the Eagles.
Â
The duo took on Michelle Tang and Katie Antilla of Cal Tech, and took them down 8-6. Lopez also competed against Antilla in singles, at the No. 6 spot.
Â
After falling behind a few times in each match, she came back to beat the Beavers' freshman (6-3, 7-5).
Â
Biola had to compete without their stud sophomore,
Kathryn Ashford. This bumped up
Madeline Heer to the No. 1 singles spot, where she fell to Rebekah Kitto who holds virtually every record in Cal Tech tennis history.
Erickson also put up a good fight in her singles match in the No. 5 spot. She eventually fell by a difference of three points in a 6-5, 6-4 loss to Cal Tech's Tang.
Â
Biola returns to action with a home match against Cal Lutheran at 3 p.m. on Feb. 7.
