SAN MARCOS, Calif. --- Both Biola golf teams began their final tournament of the fall season on Monday, playing in the first rounds of the CSU San Marcos Fall Classic in some less-than-favorable conditions.
It was in the mid-50s and overcast at Twin Oaks Golf Course when the teams took the course in the early morning for the start of the competitive tournament.
The Eagles' men's team shot two of its best three rounds of the season in order to position itself in ninth place of 12 teams. Biola combined to shoot a 306 and 307 and sits 40 strokes behind the leading team, Redlands.
The women's team played its first round of two in its tournament. The Eagles shot a 352, their second highest score in a round this season, and sit in seventh place of seven teams.
"The Eagles were fighting all the way today, but a few bigger holes by each player created some higher scoring today," said women's Head Coach
Jane Carr. "With six new players and two returners we are really looking at our fall season as an opportunity for our new recruits to get much needed collegiate tournament experience."
Two of those new players,
Sarah Paravia and
Whitney Jammerman, were Biola's lowest scorers of the day. Paravia sits in a tie for 27
th with an 85 and Jammerman is tied for 30
th at 86. Both Paravia and Jammerman shot nine pars to power their low rounds.
Jasmine Rodriguez and
Lauren Van Horn had the next best rounds for Biola, shooting a 90 and 91, respectively. Van Horn carded her first counting score of her career after walking on to the team this fall.
On the men's side, it is
William Langworthy and
Cameron Bauer leading the charge. The two are tied for 27
th of 59 players with two-round totals of 151.
Lucas Kinan and
Kevin VandeKamp had the next two scoring cards for the Eagles, shooting 154 and 158, respectively. Kinan shot the lowest round of the day, and of his career, with a first round 72. His previous career low was a 75.
Both teams are back in action tomorrow morning for the final 18 holes of the tournament. The men's team is within 29 strokes of fifth place, while the women's team sits 16 strokes back from the closest team, Concordia (Ore.).
