HIGHLIGHTS & INTERVIEWS
Â
LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It took 110 minutes, but
Amanda Lillicrop and
Miranda Starbeck paired up to score the sudden-death winner in double overtime and push the Eagles back into a tie for first place in the Golden State Athletic Conference with just two games left on their schedule.Â
Â
The game started with a ceremony honoring the Eagles' six seniors as
Briana Williams,
Michelle Clark,
Shea Davis,
Anna Barrett, and, of course, Lillicrop and Starbeck. It ended with the seniors taking center stage again as Lillicrop played a deflected shot from
Jessie Burns wide across the goal where it looked like Biola was going to miss another chance, in a game full of missed chances for both side, to get on the board. However, as the ball seemed to crawl across to the far post, Starbeck broke past her defender, beat the goalie to the ball, and fired it into the back of the net as the Biola bench, coaching staff and crowd erupted.
"It was a crucial bounceback game for us. We needed to put ourselves in position to win," said Head Coach
Todd Elkins. "We didn't play great, but in the end we kept ourselves in position to win the game."Â
Â
The goal gives Starbeck three on the season, 11 for her career, and Lillicrop's assist nets her 20 points on the season, seven goals and six assists. Twenty points is the seventh-most in the GSAC this season. On the other side of the pitch,
Briana Williams, four saves tonight, posted her sixth shutout of the season, moving her into second on the GSAC leaderboard. Williams has recorded 20 clean sheets in her career, just four shy of program leader Hilary Dunham.
Â
The game was definitely in doubt throughout with both teams playing well with the ball, 18 shots apiece, but neither team getting the final pass needed to finish in the perfect spot and pull away. The final goal is just as indicative of that as
Jessie Burns made a great run but her shot was deflected, and Lilicrop had a great shot to finish on the deflection but fired wide. Biola just managed to get that third attempt and finish to make the difference between a win and a loss or tie in a very tight contest.
"There were three of four times in the game where I thought we were combining well and I thought, 'Ok, here we have it,'" said Elkins. "To get it in double overtime on senior night, with those seniors combining, you could not have scripted the ending any better."
Â
The win tonight also keeps Biola's shot at a GSAC title alive, especially with former GSAC-leader Concordia losing to Hope International on this night. Biola moves into second place in the conference where it trails just Vanguard. For Biola to move up and claim the title, Vanguard will have to slip in one of their last two games, while Biola takes advantage. Vanguard, like Biola, has two road games left on the schedule as they head to Hope International and to Arizona Christian.
Â
Biola controls its own destiny in determining if it will keep a top-four seed. A 2-0 finish will net the Eagles at least second-place in the GSAC, and second-place brings the team back to the "fortress" that is Al Barbour Field for the playoffs. However, just a single loss could send the team all the way down to fifth, outside of home field advantage, where the 5-2-1 Master's squad currently lurks.
Â
The Eagles take on No.11 Westmont this Saturday and finish the regular season at William Jessup the following Saturday.
