LA MIRADA, Calif. --- After three consecutive seasons with five-plus wins the Eagles' men's tennis team dipped to two in 2013, but they are looking forward to a strong 2014 campaign after adding some new pieces.
 
"The team is excited and eager to start the season," said Head Coach David Goodman. "Although last year's record was weak the team feels confident and sure they will do well and improve their standing in the conference this season."
 
There is nowhere to go besides up, as Biola finished in last place in the Golden State Athletic Conference a year ago.
 
Although the Eagles lost their No. 1 individual player and All-GSAC team member, David Mossman, Goodman feels confident they have added enough pieces to improve.
 
"Biola men's tennis has made some strong additions to the team this year," said Goodman. "I think we have a solid bunch of guys that have continued to improve in the fall season and in our preseason."
 
Lucas Lee and Isaiah Pekary will be the No. 1 and No. 2 singles players for Biola in the upcoming season.
 
Lee is an incoming freshman who Goodman sees vast potential for growth in. He comes to Biola from Las Vegas, Nev. and Centennial High School.
 
Pekary had a rough year in individual play last season, going 0-18, but he was 6-13 in doubles competition. Goodman notes the strength of Pekary based on his experience. He is one of just three seniors on this season's squad.
 
Lee will join Tayven Townsend on the Eagles' top doubles pairing in 2014. The two got used to playing with one another at the recent USTA/ITA regional tournament. They made it to the semifinals of the competition and took down a team from Westmont that won the event the year before.
 
Townsend will be an important piece of Goodman's approach this season. It is his first year on the team, after transferring from Paradise Valley Community College.
 
"Townsend looks to be a newcomer, transfer student who will add depth to the lineup," said Goodman. "He has an aggressive game and can compete at a very high level."
 
Biola begins its season this Saturday with a 2 p.m. home match against Cal Tech. The team opens conference play at home against Westmont on Feb. 8.
 
Goodman mentions the matches against Hope International and Arizona Christian as important dates on the season calendar.
 
"We had close matches with these teams last year and know they will be competitive matches within our league this year."
 
The Eagles went 1-3 against those two schools last season.
