Biola Loses 76-57 to Vanguard

Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Mike Kurtz scored a game-high 24 points and added 10 rebounds while David Cline added 18 points, nine boards but it wasn't enough as Vanguard defeated Biola 76-57 in a GSAC contest on Saturday night at Chase Gymnasium.

The loss drops the Eagles to 10-8 overall and to 0-2 in GSAC play. The Lions move to 12-5 and to 1-1 in conference action with its first win over the Eagles since the 2007-08 season, snapping a string of eight-straight Biola wins in the head-to-head series.

Kurtz had a banner night for Biola, hitting 10-of-17 form the field and adding two blocks and a pair of steals for his season-best 24 points. Cline scored most of his points in the second-half, finishing -of-14 from the field and a rebound shy of the double-double.

Biola jumped out to a quick lead at 6-2 just over three minutes in. But the Eagles went silent and Vanguard scored 11-straight points over the next six minutes and used a 18-2 run over an eight-minute stretch to take a commanding 20-8 lead.

Biola would close the gap to six on a pair of free throws by Kurtz to make it 29-23, but the Eagles would trail 35-23 as the teams headed to the half.

Things got a bit worse in the second half as Biola was outscored 15-8 over the first five minutes and Vanguard stretch its lead to 19 at 50-31. The Lions would lead by as many as 28 halfway through the second half before finishing with the 19-point win.

Vanguard hit 45.6 percent from the field in the game including hitting 8-of-21 shots from three-point range. Biola hit just 38.6 percent and was 2-of-8 from long distance.

Notably missing from the Biola lineup was its second-highest scorer in Zack Zaragoza. The junior is out still after suffering an injury midway through the Eagles game on Tuesday at Westmont.

Biola returns to action on Tuesday, traveling to San Diego Christian for a 7:30 p.m. game in El Cajon.
