Mathis Places Second to Lead Biola at Season-Opener

Eagles finish eighth overall at SoCal Intercollegiate

HEMET, Calif. --- Senior Joshua Mathis finished second overall in a tough field, just one shot out of first place to lead Biola to an eighth-place finish at the California State Intercollegiate tournament at the Diamond Valley Golf Course in Hemet on Monday and Tuesday.

Mathis was impressive, carding rounds of 72 and 75 on the first day of the tournametn followed by a 71 on Tuesday to finish with a two-over-par 218. He placed just one shot behind invidivual medalist Shane Favinger of Holy Names.

Overall, the Eagles were eighth in the nine-team field with a 77-over-par 941. Cal State San Marcos took top honors followed by The Master's College and UC Riverside.

Both senior Conner Penfold and freshman Joel Smith carded identical three-round scores to finish tied for 43rd with a 244 (78-81-85). Senior Nick Grady was tied for 47th with a 248 (85-88-75) with freshman Kevin Vandekamp placing 49th with a 249 (79-81-89).

Biola returns to action on Sunday and Monday, heading to Prescott, Ariz., for the Embry-Riddle Fall Invitational at the Talking Rock Golf Club.
