Eagles Take a Match From No. 8 Vanguard but Ultimately Fall 8-1

COSTA MESA, Calif. --- Biola's men's tennis team put up quite a battle in its GSAC opener on Tuesday, taking a set and putting a little scare in No. 9 Vanguard before falling 8-1 at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

The Eagles (1-1, 0-1 GSAC) picked up a victory at No. 3 doubles where the team of Isaiah Pekary and Anthony Sena earned a hard-fought 8-5 win. The other two doubles matches weren't as close and Biola trailed 2-1 after doubles.

But Vanguard put the match away by sweeping singles. The last three matches off the court were No. 4, 5 and 6 single matches. Thomas Coibion forced his first set to a tiebreaker, but was unable to win it and dropped the second set as well. Pekary carried the momentum from his doubles win to singles, but ultimately lost 6-4, 6-3.

Biola returns home for its GSAC home opener on Thursday, though the Eagles have to face off against No. 1 Fresno Pacific University at 2:00 p.m.
