Biola Falls at Cal Maritime, 74-65

Box Score VALLEJO, Calif. --- Playing in its second game in as many nights, Biola struggled against a three-point barrage and fell 74-65 to Cal Maritime in a non-conference game on Saturday night.

The Eagles drop to 7-3 with the loss while the Keelhaulers improve to 9-2 on the season.

Zack Zaragoza scored a team-high 17 points and was one of four Biola players in double-figures. David Cline added 11 points and 10 rebounds with Mike Kurtz contributing 12 points, eight rebounds and three blocks.

Biola shot a solid 52.2 percent in the contest including out-shooting Cal Maritime 60.9 percent to 35.7 percent in the second half. However, the Keelhaulers hit 11 three-pointers and pulled down 12 offensive rebounds to add second-chance points as well.

The Eagles opened the game strong, using a 10-2 run to take an early lead. But after a quick timeout, Cal Maritime responded with a 18-3 run to take a 20-15 lead midway through the half. Dakota Anderson hit a bucket and a three-pointer after a Cline free throw to give Biola back a one-point lead at 21-20 with 6:34 to go in the period, but the Keelhaulers used an 11-0 run to go back up eight and held a 36-28 lead at the break.

Biola closed the gap to four in the early minutes of the second half, but Cal Maritime quickly stretched the lead back up to 10 at 54-44 with 12:14 left. The Keelhaulers led by 11 with 5:03 left when Biola made a final charge. Cline hit a bucket followed by a turner over and bucket by Zaragoza. After a miss on the other end, Zaragoza was fouled and hit both free throws to make it a five-point game at 63-58 with 2:52 left.

But Biola would get not closer as Maritime hit 11-of-12 free throw attempts down the line to seal the nine-point win.

Keven Campbell scored 22 points off the bench to lead the Keelhaulers, hitting 4-of-10 from three-point range and 6-of-7 from the charity stripe. Grant Blaser added 17 points.

Biola falls to 2-3 on the road but is still a perfect 5-0 at home. The Eagles return to the comforts of Chase Gymnasium for a big game on Friday against former arch-rival Azusa Pacific University. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. Fans are encouraged to get tickets in advance as the game is expected to sell out before Friday.
