SAN MARCOS, Calif. --- Freshman Ava Lourenco became Biola women's golf's first individual medalist by winning the Cal State San Marcos Co-Ed Invitational leading the women's team to a second-place finish overall on Monday and Tuesday at the Twin Oaks Golf Course in San Marcos.

Lourenco fired a six-over-par 150 to finish in a tie for first place, carding a better score on the back nine of the final round to break the tie and take home the trophy. Lourenco opened the tournament with a first-round 74 and carded a 76 on the second day for the 150.

Her round helped the Biola women's team place second among five teams on the women's side--the best finish in the team's short history. Jackie Mata took home 11th place overall with a 173 (88-85), followed closed by Lauren Marlow, who finished 12th with a 174 (88-86). Megan Anderson placed tied for 17th (93-89=182) and Jasmine Rodriguez rounded out the group in 25th (94-105=199). Beth Williams, competing as an individual, tied with Anderson for 17th with a 182 (92-90).

On the men's side, Joshua Mathis again paced the Eagles, placing 11th overall despite finishing with a one-under-par 215. The senior opened with a 70 and closed with a 69 with a 76 thrown in the middle in yet another outstanding performance. Kevin Vandekamp placed 35th overall with a 226 (78-72-76) follwoed by Joel Smith and Nick Grady who finished tied for 37th with a 228 (Smith: 72-81-75; Grady 75-74-79). Rounding out the top five for Biola was Conner Penfold with a 243 (79-86-78).

The competition closed out the fall portion of the schedule for the Biola golf teams. The Biola men's team returns to action on Feb. 4-5 at the Cal State San Marcos Cougar Invitational at the Shadowridge Country Club in Vista while the women open the spring schedule a week later at the Point Loma Nazarene Super San Diego Championship on Feb. 11-12 at the Riverwalk Golf Course in San Diego.
