Eagles' Season Comes to an End in Shootout Loss vs The Master's

Jessica Austin scored Biola's lone goal in the match

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola's outstanding season came to a sudden, disappointing end as Biola lost a penalty kick shootout to The Master's College after playing to a 1-1 tie, allowing the Mustangs to advance in the GSAC Tournament while knocking out the Eagles on Tuesday afternoon.

Biola's season ends with the team holding a 10-6-1 overall record--it's best in seven seasons. The Mustangs improve to 10-8-1 and move on to face No. 3 seed Azusa Pacific on Friday.

The match got off to a quick start with both schools scoring once within the first 13 minutes of the contest.

The Master's struck first in the eighth minute, taking advantage of a mishandled ball in the box after a corner kick. The ball looked like it woud be grabbed by keeper Erin Frushon, however, it was knocked away by a slew of bodies in front and cathered by Jessica Long, who sent it into the back of the net for the early edge.

BIola responded just five minutes later on a great breakaway chance by the Eagles. Senior Sarina Coutin sent a quick pass through the defense right to the foot of sophomore Jessica Austin, who went one-on-one with the keeper and beat her with a quick move, then finished into the open net.

Despite the fast start, neither team found the back of the net again until the shootout, though both teams had great chances.

In the 23rd minute, a bad pass along the Biola back line allowed the Mustangs a breakaway chance as Kailin Sholin took the ball toware the goal. However, Frushon came out and made a huge save to keep the score level.

In the second half, the Eagles had a few chances nine minutes into the half. A free kick from 25 yards out started the run for Biola as Taylor Lundquist sent the ball into a fray in the box. After the Eagles had a few good looks at the net, the ball was cleared back out a bit. However, Lundquist had a crack at goal after settling the clearance attempt 20 yards out and The Master's netminder Ilyssa Espiritu made a leaping save. On her punt, Coutin intercepted and had a break only to be stuffed at the net by Espiritu.

As the teams headed to overtime, both had great chances to score. Biola got the first chance jsut one minute in as Austin carried the ball through the Mustangs defense then slotted a pass to Coutin. Her shot attempted was barely blocked by a Master's defender and cleared from danger.

Six minutes later, the Mustangs had a chance on a break as Natasha Coyle took a great shot from only see Frushon push it up and over the bar.

Neither team had a great chance to score in the second overtime. Biola had owned the second overtime period this season, winning three matches 2-1 in double overtime. However, the Eagles could not muster a shot and the match ended in a tie. Penalty kicks were then required to determine which team advanced in the tournament and which saw its season come to an end.

Both attempts in the first round were good as was the attempt by The Master's in the second round. However, Espiritu came up with a big save on Biola's attempt by Natalie Oliver to give the Mustangs an early lead. Frushon then came up with a big save on Kayla Davis' attempt to start the next round and Ashleigh Cooley scored to tie it back up at 2-2.

But after The Master's scored to start the fourth round, Katie Cabuling's shot missed the net wide and Bobbie Roberts sent home her shot to give the Mustangs the victory.

Frushon capped an impressive career with another solid match, recording 10 saves, facing 15 shots and allowing just the single goal. She finishes her career as the leader in saves (232) and second in goals against average (0.86) and wins (23).

The loss was a tough blow for the Eagles, who end the season with a 7-1-1 record over its final nine matches. Biola wrapped up second place in the GSAC and the No. 2 seed in the tournament with a 7-2-0 mark. Their 10-6-1 overall record was the second-best in program history and the best since 2004.

Austin's goal in the match was her ninth, giving her the most in a season by a Biola player since 2004.
