LA MIRADA --- The Biola women's soccer team faced the visiting Cal State San Marcos at home inside Al Barbour Field. A thrilling 90 minutes ended in a 2-2 tie.
Biola twice rallied from a deficit, with
Jade Alverio scoring with just under two minutes remaining to pull the Eagles even in a 2-2 draw against Cal State San Marcos.
The Cougars struck first in the 28th minute, taking a 1-0 lead that held through halftime.
Biola answered early in the second half.
Hayden Gehring found the back of the net in the 53rd minute off an assist from
Briley Phelps, leveling the match at 1-1.
The Eagles continued to push for the go-ahead goal, finishing the night with an 18-10 advantage in shots. Phelps came close in the 78th minute, sending an attempt off the crossbar as Biola looked to take its first lead of the night.
Cal State San Marcos regained the advantage in the 83rd minute, going back in front 2-1.
Biola was not finished.
In the 88th minute, Gehring and
Taylin Laws combined to set up Alverio, who buried the late equalizer to bring the match level at 2-2 and secure the draw for the Eagles.
"Last two minutes of the game," said Alverio. "Hayden popped a beautiful pass up the field to me. I trusted it, was calm on the ball and put it away for my team."
Laura Brennan and
Sami Robinson split time in goal for Biola, each playing 45 minutes. Brennan recorded two saves in the opening half before Robinson added two more after the break, combining for four saves on the night.
Biola finished with nine shots in each half and held an 18-10 advantage for the match.
"Going down in the game is not ideal, but was great to see our team's character and resiliency fighting back not once but twice," stated Head Coach
Brett Croft. "Our group showed a lot of heart and grit this evening, we will look to build on that."
The result moves the Eagles to 2-2-1 on the season. They will host Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday, September 12th at 7 p.m.
