Joshua Mathis

SALEM, Ore. --- Biola's men's golf team wrapped up the first round of the 2011 NAIA Preview Tournament tied for 10th place out of 20 teams in the elite NAIA field, sitting just 18 shots back through Monday at the Creekside Golf Club in Salem.

The Eagles fired a first-round 308, sitting 20 shots over par through the first 18 holes of the two-round tournament. BIola was tied with The Master's College and Warner Pacific College (Ore.). Texas Wesleyan University held the lead with a two-over 290.

Joshua Mathis led the way for Biola with an impressive one-over-par 73. Mathis was one-over through the first nine holes (starting from the 10th hole) and fired an even-par 36 on the back nine, recording a birdie on seven to pull back to even par before a bogey on nine left him one-over.

Freshman Kyle Schrader got off to a rough start with a three-over-par effort through nine, but managed to finish just one over par on the back nine to record a four-over 76 to finish tied 30th at four-over-par.

Fellow freshman Micah Mathis followed close behind with a five-over-par 77. Mathis started strong, sitting at just one over par after a birdie on the 12th hole. However as the rain began to fall and the wind kicked up, he suffered a bogey in four of the final six holes.

Rounding out the five for the Eagles were John Graham fired a 10-over-par 82 while Greg Bodine finished at 11-over 83.

Biola closes out the tournament on Tuesday with the final round beginning at 8:00 a.m.
