LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Junior midfielder
Katie Cabuling netted her second goal of the season in the 77th minute as Biola picked up a big GSAC win by beating Fresno Pacific University 1-0 on Wednesday night on Al Barbour Field.
The victory was the Eagles' third-straight and sixth in their last eight games, moving them over .500 at 6-5-0 on the season. Biola also moves into a three-way tie for second in the conference standings with a 3-1-0 GSAC record. The Sunbirds fall to 5-4-0 on the season and to 1-3-0 in the conference.
Cabuling's goal capped an impressive effort by the Eagles, who outshot Fresno Pacific 18-10 including an 11-5 edge in the second half. The winning goal came in the 77th minute and was started with a great cross by senior
Sarina Coutin from the right side. The ball was sent into the area where Cabuling met it and sent it into the left side of the net.
It was the second goal of the season for Cabuling--both of which have been game-winners. She also had the winning goal in Biola's 3-0 win over Marymount College back in September.
The Eagles had a couple of great chances in the second half. Ten minutes before the eventual winner was scored, Biola's counter attack created a great scoring opportunity with sophomore
Victoria Dalla Zanna firing a shot on frame to the left of the FPU netminder. However, a Sunbird defender was in the right place at the right time and cleared the ball from danger with a strong header.
Biola goalkeeper
Erin Frushon put together another masterful performance with the Biola back line doing its part. The Eagles held the Sunbirds to just eight shots with Frushon making four saves and coming off her line to negate a few other chances. It was her fourth shutout of the season and extended her home scoreless streak to 306 minutes, not allowing a goal since August 30th.
The Eagles have a tough stretch of games coming up to end the regular season with all five of their remaining opponents ranked or receiving votes in the NAIA National Poll. First up is a home contest against arch-rival and No. 3 ranked Azusa Pacific University on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The match is one of the main events of Biola Weekend, the annual parents and alumni weekend presented by Biola University.
