LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Freshman
Carlos Ballesteros scored twice to lead Biola to a non-conference win over Marymount College in its first home match in nearly a month, winning 3-0 on Thursday night at Al Barbour Field.
Biola improves to 2-4-1 on the season in its final tuneup before starting conference play on Saturday. The Mariners drop to 3-5-0 overall.
Freshman forward
Carlos Ballesteros got the Eagles on the board with a goal in the first half, then senior
Phillip Friehe added a tally in the second.
Ballesteros, who came off the bench in the 22nd minute, found the back of the net just five minutes later. The freshman received a nice feed from junior
Zach Bautista, followed the ball into the box and fired a quick shot past the sprawling keeper into the far corner.
Early in the second half, Biola added a second goal thanks to a great one-on-one effort by Friehe. After a thwarted scoring chance by Marymount, junior
Cody Shelton came out of no where to take control and carried the ball over the center line. He then slotted a nice through ball to Friehe who went the rest of the way behind the Mariner defense and beat the goalie with a quick effort.
The freshman would tally his second collegiate goal to wrap up the scoring, putting in a rebound off a blocked shot in the 77th minute. Ballesteros now leads the team in scoring despite playing just 97 minutes this season.
Biola had a number of great chances, the best of which came less than a minute after Friehe's goal. The senior had another chance with a quick run down the far side, but his shot rattled off the cross bar, down on the goal line and was cleared by the keeper.
Overall, the Eagles held a dominating shot advantage at 24-8, putting 10 shots on frame. While the total was over its average of 15 shots per game, the three goals matched the total scored in Biola's six previous matches.
Junior
Aaron Fenlason recorded his second shutout of the season while facing eight shots and recording a pair of saves on the night. He lowers his goals against average to 0.68 with the effort.
Marymount's best chance came in the 68th minute as Scott smith was tripped just outside of the box on a breakaway chance. The ensuing free kick by Smith was blocked and cleared from danger.
The Eagles open GSAC play on Saturday (Sept. 25), traveling to El Cajon to face San Diego Christian College at 3:00 p.m. Biola returns home on Wednesday (Sept. 29), hosting No. 9 California Baptist University at 7:00 p.m.
