Biola Falls 1-0 at NCAA Division I UC Riverside

Phillip Friehe (#21) had seven shots for the Eagles in just 54 minutes

RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Despite putting together its best start-to-finish effort of the season and firing 13 shots against an impressive defense, Biola once again left empty handed, falling to NCAA Division I UC Riverside 1-0 on Monday night at the UCR Soccer Stadium.

The Eagles suffer their fourth 1-0 defeat this season and drop to 1-4-0 overall while the Highlanders improve to 2-3-0.

Cesar Diaz' goal in the 66th minute proved to be the match-winner as he collected a loose ball in the box and fired it into the back of the net to put UC Riverside up 1-0.

Biola had a strong performance against the Big West squad, peppering the UCR goal with 13 shots on the night including seven from Phillip Friehe. The senior made the most of his 56 minutes off the bench, firing seven shots and putting one on goal in an attempt to keep the Eagles in the match as long as possible.

All of Friehe's shots came in the second period including two in what looked to be Biola's best chance to score. Just two minutes after the Riverside goal, the Eagles had three cracks at the goal, but Friehe's two shots were wide knocked down while Graham Forster's shot just after sailed wide right.

Friehe had another great chance in the 81st minute but had his shot blocked. Kevin Kiser took a crack at the loose ball, but missed the net to the right.

Senior Jacob Ravenscraft had a chance to get the Eagles on the board early in the second half, beating the keeper with a shot, but missing the net wide. He would finish with three shots on the night, forcing one of two saves by netminder Nick Goldreich.

Aaron Fenlason played another outstanding match in goal, making four saves while allowing just one goal.

"We really played well and I think this was the best performance of the year so far," said Head Coach Bryan Kuderman. "Phillip turned it on in the second half there and really had a good game. We had a couple of good chances, but just couldn't convert."

Biola returns to action on Saturday (Sept. 18), closing out its long road trip with a non-conference match at Cal State San Marcos. The match is scheduled to kick-off at 2:30 p.m. in San Marcos.
